How to incorporate the 2018 Color of the Year into your home décor

Categories: Colors | Posted: January 12, 2018 | Comments Off on How to incorporate the 2018 Color of the Year into your home décor

Pantone has officially crowned Ultra Violet as the 2018 Color of the Year, and it’s certainly a bold choice! Here are some tips for integrating this fashion forward color into your Evans Coghill new home design:

  • Set a tone. Colors can range from soft pastels to rich jewel tones to bright, primary shades. The key to using color well is that it should flow, not be a patchwork of conflicting tones. Before you choose something as bold as Ultra Violet, decide how (or if) it meshes with your current color palette or decorating scheme.
  • Don’t be afraid. If you really love a bold shade, go ahead and use it. Just figure out how much of it you are comfortable with. What level of intensity do you want? A whole room? One wall? An area rug, curtains or pillows? Wouldn’t this bedroom look great with Ultra Violet accent pillows or even flower vases?
  • Think smaller. Powder rooms are a great place to experiment with a bold color like Ultra Violet. Create your own little jewel box of a room with intensely hued walls or towels or other accessories.
  • Keep your home’s exterior quiet. Painting your home an attention-grabbing color like purple could make you the neighborhood pariah. If you really love this vibrant color, try painting your front door or incorporating it in your pots and plantings.
  • Create balance. If you choose a provocative palette, remember to ground the vibrant colors and balance them by adding a rich chocolate, black or peacock blue.

Now that you have some expert decorating tips, it’s time to go Ultra Violet!

New Year Resolutions for Your Home

Categories: Good Info to Know, Homeowner Tips | Posted: January 5, 2018 | Comments Off on New Year Resolutions for Your Home

Setting New Year goals for yourself may be easier than setting them for your whole household. Whether it’s trying a new design trend or making sure family dinners happen once a week, here are some good ideas for a bright 2018!

  • Create goals that are reasonable. Instead of resolving to do something you don’t like or that may be too ambitious, try setting goals that are doable. It’s easier to reach your target if you actually make it reachable! And you’ll love that feeling of accomplishment.
  • Get organized. Now is the perfect time to de-clutter your drawers and desk. Sort paperwork, bills, mementos and mail. Clean out the closets – and see how much space you have. Invest in a closet organization system.
  • Automate it. Whether you’re trying to lower the heating bills or find time to exercise consistently, automation is the key. Automated thermostats. Automated bill paying. Automatic reminders. It’s easier to develop and stick to new habits with a little help from technology.
  • Take a risk. Nothing too crazy, just something outside your comfort zone. Always wanted to learn rock-climbing? Do it! Wondering what ultra-violet would look like in the family room? Do it! You’ll never know if you don’t try!
  • Start – and finish – a project. Whether it’s a DIY project, a redecorating scheme or a larger renovation, break it into steps so it doesn’t seem overwhelming. Create a rough schedule and try to check off parts of the project in increments. It may take a while, but eventually you’ll get it done.
  • Slow down. Take the time to sit down and eat as a family. Savor a meal instead of rushing around and grabbing fast food. Schedule movie or game nights. Un-schedule yourself from too many obligations. Say no.
  • Create a comfortable bedroom. Basic but necessary. Stop using your bedroom as an office/play room/library/laundry sorting facility. Make it a quiet, comfortable space where you can collapse and recharge at the end of the day.

  • Love your home and your life, imperfections included. Appreciate the warmth and shelter your home provides. Take note of the thoughtful little things your spouse does. Enjoy watching your kids play together. Be grateful for your home, your family, and your health – and let the other stuff go.

Evans Coghill Homes’ Alan Banks installed as NCHBA President

Categories: Awards, New Homes in Charlotte, Team Members | Posted: December 19, 2017 | Comments Off on Evans Coghill Homes’ Alan Banks installed as NCHBA President

Here at Evans Coghill Homes, we are so proud of our Owner & CMO, Alan Banks. He was recently installed as the president of the North Carolina Home Builders Association.

“It is such an honor to be elected to this position,” Alan said. “I am very excited about the year ahead. The NCHBHA does great work, and I can’t wait to continue defending housing affordability for all North Carolinians in 2018.”

The NCHBA has been around for over 50 years, working to make the industry better.

With almost 14,000 members, the association encourages industry professionalism, provides a forum to strengthen industry views, and serves as an advocate for the industry that provides homes for the citizens of North Carolina. NCHBA plays a key role in helping maintain consistently higher industry standards of conduct, quality, and ethics.

“People choose to get involved with the association for the same reasons I have,” notes Alan. “Because they want to serve this great industry and do their part so more families in North Carolina will have a chance to own a home.

“I truly believe that the work we do positively changes lives and families, and strengthens the fabric of our community. We make a difference each and every day. Whether you are hammering nails, digging footings, hanging drywall, or running wire… whether you are a banker, an insurance agent, or a sales consultant, you are part of this great and necessary industry.”

In 2016, there were 61,000 new single-family and multi-family homes started in North Carolina. Many more homes were renovated or improved for families. And as Alan said so eloquently during his acceptance speech, the NCHBA has a duty to make sure everyone in North Carolina has a chance to own a home.

“We are going to fight for housing affordability, in the town council meetings, county commission meetings, at the NC General Assembly and in Washington DC. Together, we are going to stand for what is right, and clear the path for more new homeowners across North Carolina.”

Give Your Mudroom a Little Love with Some of These Must-Have Features!

Categories: Design Tips, Floor plans, Interior Design Thoughts | Posted: December 8, 2017 | Comments Off on Give Your Mudroom a Little Love with Some of These Must-Have Features!

A mudroom is a workhorse of a space, fulfilling a variety of different purposes depending on the home and the family. In areas with months of cold and/or wet weather, they are essential; a place where your kids drop backpacks and put on boots. Whether yours is big or small, here are some tips for getting more out of your mudroom.

  • Use the space you have more efficiently. Some mudrooms are huge; some are tiny nooks. Look at your space and the way you use it. Do you like clear floors and an appearance of organization? Closets or cabinets are the answers. Do you want easy accessibility? Go for cubbies and hooks.
  • Don’t skimp on flooring. Choose something durable and non-slippery. Tile, vinyl flooring, hardwood or laminated flooring are good choices that will last for years – if cared for properly.
  • Think about what goes on the walls. If your mudroom is like most, it will endure muddy hands and feet, scrapes from hockey sticks, and who knows what else. Choose paint or stain with a durable finish that can be washed down easily. Also, have a little fun. Pick a bright color or even a bit of wallpaper!
  • Make it more than a mudroom. If you have a larger space, sub-divide it into a multi-use room. Add a powder room or a drop zone counter. Create a laundry room or dog bath. Add a craft workstation for your little artists. Give yourself some long-term storage for out of season items by tucking a cabinet into a back corner. Create a family communication center with a blackboard or corkboard for calendars, invitations, reminders, etc.

Most people don’t use their front doors; they come into their homes through their mudroom. It is a public space, acting as the transition from the outside world to your inside world. Make yours a little more interesting and functional today!

Evans Coghill Homes Project Manager, Taylor Bennett, Earns His Accredited Builder Designation

Categories: Team Members | Posted: November 29, 2017 | Comments Off on Evans Coghill Homes Project Manager, Taylor Bennett, Earns His Accredited Builder Designation

At Evans Coghill, we are continuously proud and inspired by the quality and expertise of our team members. But Project Manager Taylor Bennett has outdone himself, earning the hard to attain Accredited Builder Designation from the North Carolina Builder’s Institute. We’re extremely proud of his hard work and dedication, and want people to understand more about his endeavors and how they impact their new home search.

What does it mean to be an Accredited Builder?  What were the requirements to earn your Accredited Builder Designation (ABD)?

The purpose of the Accredited Builder Designation is to further the education of builders, but also to provide a more well-rounded builder experience. Earning the designation requires a certain amount of field experience, specifically 3 to 5 years in the building industry, actually building homes and being very hands on.  I also had to take 72 hours of classes through the North Carolina Builder’s Institute. My classes ranged from project management to business administration to customer service, with the intention of learning about all facets of building. It took about two years total for me to accomplish this part of the process.

Many people start this process but do not finish. Tell us what the process was like for you and why you continued through to the end?

My motivation was the attainment of it. I don’t like starting something and not completing it. My current interest is in high performance homes. I was taking courses for that, so it made sense to work on other facets of the building industry, too. The best way I could see to do that was to start and complete the ABD.

Does this designation differentiate you and/or Evans Coghill Homes from your competitors?

I don’t know a lot of people in the industry who have this designation. It’s a huge time commitment, so very few people wind up finishing it. As for how it affects Evans Coghill… homeowners expect a high quality home, but they don’t check to see who is building it. The ABD is a big differentiator. We can claim to be a better builder and back it up.

How will Evans Coghill homeowners benefit from the ABD?

In the long run, we can give them a higher quality product, and a more efficient building process. Faster close times, fewer delays or slow downs. The ABD allows me to foresee industry changes, and plan accordingly. Homes are increasingly complex structures, especially the HVAC systems and home automation features. I now have the ability to teach homeowners about their homes, so they are more educated and able to interact with it comfortably.

What does earning the ABD mean to you?

It was a long process but worth it. The ABD really benefits everyone – me, Evans Coghill Homes, our homeowners. My grandfather was a lawyer, and he instilled the importance of education in us. I thought about him when I was working for this designation. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, they all have to take continuing education to keep their licensing/certifications. Builders don’t. I put a lot of stock in education. Having this designation – or any designation recognized by the HBA or NCHBA – is not just letters behind a name. It means that we know that our industry is ever changing, and that we have a responsibility to keep current. At Evans Coghill, we take pride in what we do and want to be better at it always. In the end, it comes back to what’s best for the homeowner.
