Ultimate Recycling Project – A Bee Hive

New home recycling

The ultimate recycle project , a honeybee hive relocation before demolishing a house.

Building new homes in existing neighborhoods around Charlotte is part of what we do. We enjoy replacing older, less desirable homes with new, exciting homes in Cotswold and Plaza Midwood! When we tear down a home, we strive to recycle as much as we can. We separate the materials and send them to be recycled instead of sending it to the landfill. It does take longer and cost more but it is part of being a good steward in the community.

Usually the recycling involves lots of metal, brick, kitchen cabinets and plumbing fixtures.

This time we encountered something entirely different – recycling a bee hive. Yes, a fully developed very old, very active honeybee hive.

The home is located in  the Charlotte area and had, unfortunately, fallen into a state disrepair. We salvaged and recycled what we could and were ready to demo the rest when our own Chris Folk discovered the bee hive. You should know Chris is an expect beekeeper himself and is the source of much local honey around office.

Chris and his beekeeping friend, Steve, embarked on opening up the wall of the house, carefully removing the hive and the honeycombs and moving the hive to its new home in Chris’ backyard. No one was expecting what they found when they opened up the wall of the home. A hive that may have been over 10 years old, full of very busy bees and 80 pounds of delicious honey. It was a huge find!

Working carefully, the removal took all weekend as you can only move so fast moving bees! All bees were removed and relocated.

The home was safely torn down and hauled away. Another very unique recycling project for Evans Coghill Homes.
