Give Your Mudroom a Little Love with Some of These Must-Have Features!

Categories: Design Tips, Floor plans, Interior Design Thoughts | Posted: December 8, 2017 | Comments Off on Give Your Mudroom a Little Love with Some of These Must-Have Features!

A mudroom is a workhorse of a space, fulfilling a variety of different purposes depending on the home and the family. In areas with months of cold and/or wet weather, they are essential; a place where your kids drop backpacks and put on boots. Whether yours is big or small, here are some tips for getting more out of your mudroom.

  • Use the space you have more efficiently. Some mudrooms are huge; some are tiny nooks. Look at your space and the way you use it. Do you like clear floors and an appearance of organization? Closets or cabinets are the answers. Do you want easy accessibility? Go for cubbies and hooks.
  • Don’t skimp on flooring. Choose something durable and non-slippery. Tile, vinyl flooring, hardwood or laminated flooring are good choices that will last for years – if cared for properly.
  • Think about what goes on the walls. If your mudroom is like most, it will endure muddy hands and feet, scrapes from hockey sticks, and who knows what else. Choose paint or stain with a durable finish that can be washed down easily. Also, have a little fun. Pick a bright color or even a bit of wallpaper!
  • Make it more than a mudroom. If you have a larger space, sub-divide it into a multi-use room. Add a powder room or a drop zone counter. Create a laundry room or dog bath. Add a craft workstation for your little artists. Give yourself some long-term storage for out of season items by tucking a cabinet into a back corner. Create a family communication center with a blackboard or corkboard for calendars, invitations, reminders, etc.

Most people don’t use their front doors; they come into their homes through their mudroom. It is a public space, acting as the transition from the outside world to your inside world. Make yours a little more interesting and functional today!

Is It Time To Ditch The Dining Room?

Categories: Design Tips, Floor plans, Good Info to Know, Homeowner Tips, Interior Design Thoughts, Tips | Posted: January 30, 2017 | Comments Off on Is It Time To Ditch The Dining Room?

Home designs tend to reflect changes in the way we live. Over the years, homes have gotten larger and more open. In fact, most newer homes have a much more informal feel than homes built just a decade or two ago.

And thanks to packed schedules, modern families have more casual lifestyles. They definitely don’t have formal, sit-down dinners every night in the dining room. (They likely don’t have a sit-down dinner at all!) So, another one of the recent changes is the removal of a formal dining room from floor plans.

At Evans Coghill, we’ve designed several of our plans to have no formal dining rooms – The River Birch, River Bend, Crepe Myrtle, River Crossing, and River Cottage. These homes have open floor plans, with combination great room/kitchen/dining area layouts – ideal for both entertaining and busy everyday lives.

A recent article on HomeAdvisor talked about the trend for “ditching the dining room” even in older homes. It mentions how people are renovating older homes and converting their dining rooms into super-sized kitchens or open living spaces.

Are you a dining room traditionalist? Would your home feel incomplete without a dining room? Or are you a flex space lover, glad to have as much open usable space as possible? Either way, Evans Coghill has you covered! Come see our homes for yourself!

What’s Hot In The Kitchen – Other Than The Oven!

white-countertops-blog-2When it comes to home design trends, the kitchen more than any other room is the space that can look dated, and is consequently the room most often in need of renovating. At Evans Coghill, we strive to design kitchens that are timeless, while reflecting current trends.

The recent 2016 Builder Practices Survey, a national survey of homebuilders that captures valuable information on the product features included in new residential construction, offers an interesting look at what’s hot in kitchen trends right now.

Among the findings:

  • 64% of the respondents said they have granite countertops
  • 26% said their backsplashes are white
  • 60% have wood, raised panel cabinetry
  • 79% reported that their appliances are stainless steel

An accompanying Houzz survey asked homeowners about the colors in their kitchens, and 34% reported that white cabinets were their choice, followed by medium-toned wood finishes.

We asked Amy Alexander, owner of Ask Amy Interior Design, and our resident design expert here at Evans Coghill, for her thoughts are on the white kitchen trend. “White kitchens are great if they suit the personality of the homeowner,” she said. “White is classic, clean, and neutral, and still seems to be the most popular option. Design-wise, urban farmhouse is a very big look right now and white is easily incorporated with that. Softer grays or off whites have also been featured lately as well.”white-backsplash-for-blog
And what about the other elements from the survey? “Most of the new homeowner buyers that I am working with are incorporating upgrades like raised paneling on the cabinet doors and wood accents,” she noted. “And while granite is always a popular choice, I am also seeing more quartz countertops as well.”

If you look through photos of our kitchens at Evans Coghill, you’ll see many of these features, along with classic design and superior craftsmanship. Our kitchens are designed to last – from the materials to the features and finishes. And in our opinion, that kind of resilience is one of the hottest trends of all!
