Team Member Spotlight…. McLean New Home Specialist, Kendell Burruss

Categories: Communities, Homeownership, McLean, Neighborhoods, Team Members | Posted: February 21, 2018 | Comments Off on Team Member Spotlight…. McLean New Home Specialist, Kendell Burruss

Our team members are one of our biggest strengths here at Evans Coghill Homes. They’re dedicated and knowledgeable, but they are also very interesting people with fascinating backgrounds. Our newest addition, Kendell Burruss, is no different. She’s an amazing asset as a New Home Specialist at McLean, thanks to her fascinating background.

Where are you from? How did you wind up in Charlotte?

I was born here in the States but moved to France when I was 10. I speak French fluently, which helps me to connect more easily with those looking to move to McLean with similar backgrounds! After I graduated from college in France, I moved to Ohio where my sister was living, and worked at an in-house ad agency for about 5 years which ended up closing. At the time, my sister was a flight attendant, so I asked her what city she thought would work for me. She said Charlotte, so that’s where I headed!

How did you get started in the home building industry?

About four years ago, I decided I wanted to switch careers but also wanted to make this change a fulfilling decision. I like talking to people, getting to know their stories and helping others. I found I was drawn to real estate. So, I took night classes, got my license, and the rest is history!

What brought you to Evans Coghill Homes at McLean in Belmont?

Just last year, I was driving around the area, and came across signs for McLean EVERYWHERE! I was very much drawn to it and felt a strong attachment to it. I asked myself “How can I work in this area??” I always wanted to be a New Home Specialist, and eventually I wound up having a meeting with Alan (Banks), Camine (Pappas) and the team. They brought me on and I couldn’t have asked for a better-case scenario!

Why will people love the Town of Belmont?

It’s a very quaint little town. Sort of frozen in time but with a very millennial flair. The demographics vary, from one end of the spectrum to the other. You can go to the pub or have tapas. At night, it’s a lively little town. South Main Cycles, the bicycle shop, turns into a bar called Station! I also like The Jailhouse, a private bourbon and whiskey lounge set in Belmont’s old jailhouse.

What is different about Evans Coghill Homes compared to other builders?

The homes we’re building at McLean are amazing. I love being part of every aspect of the process, not just the selling phase. I really feel like part of the family. When I first went to the Evans Coghill website and started reading about the company, the thing that got me excited was their (Chris & Alan’s) story about how they met on a Habitat for Humanity build. Then they formed a company to help people and continue to make sure that a portion of all sales go directly back to Habitat for Humanity in Charlotte. I immediately felt that this charitable commitment showed the family side of company, the culture and what they really stand for.

What is the most rewarding part of your job as a New Home Specialist?

A home is very personal; it represents family and safety. Knowing that our buyers trust me to accompany them in this journey to find a home is so rewarding. Becoming a part of this important step of their life, sharing their stories, and becoming friends along the way.

What do you like to do for fun?

I like to travel, which is good since none of my immediate family is in Charlotte, and I have to travel to see them! I’ve just started to enjoy fitness, especially kettlebells! I like to have a good time with family and friends.

We’re so excited to have Kendell as part of the Evans Coghill team and can’t wait to see all the lives she transforms as our New Home Specialist at McLean. Kendell’s background, experience and sheer desire to help people on their new home journey will be one of the many reasons people fall in love with Belmont, McLean and their Evans Coghill home.

Evans Coghill Homes’ Alan Banks installed as NCHBA President

Categories: Awards, New Homes in Charlotte, Team Members | Posted: December 19, 2017 | Comments Off on Evans Coghill Homes’ Alan Banks installed as NCHBA President

Here at Evans Coghill Homes, we are so proud of our Owner & CMO, Alan Banks. He was recently installed as the president of the North Carolina Home Builders Association.

“It is such an honor to be elected to this position,” Alan said. “I am very excited about the year ahead. The NCHBHA does great work, and I can’t wait to continue defending housing affordability for all North Carolinians in 2018.”

The NCHBA has been around for over 50 years, working to make the industry better.

With almost 14,000 members, the association encourages industry professionalism, provides a forum to strengthen industry views, and serves as an advocate for the industry that provides homes for the citizens of North Carolina. NCHBA plays a key role in helping maintain consistently higher industry standards of conduct, quality, and ethics.

“People choose to get involved with the association for the same reasons I have,” notes Alan. “Because they want to serve this great industry and do their part so more families in North Carolina will have a chance to own a home.

“I truly believe that the work we do positively changes lives and families, and strengthens the fabric of our community. We make a difference each and every day. Whether you are hammering nails, digging footings, hanging drywall, or running wire… whether you are a banker, an insurance agent, or a sales consultant, you are part of this great and necessary industry.”

In 2016, there were 61,000 new single-family and multi-family homes started in North Carolina. Many more homes were renovated or improved for families. And as Alan said so eloquently during his acceptance speech, the NCHBA has a duty to make sure everyone in North Carolina has a chance to own a home.

“We are going to fight for housing affordability, in the town council meetings, county commission meetings, at the NC General Assembly and in Washington DC. Together, we are going to stand for what is right, and clear the path for more new homeowners across North Carolina.”

Evans Coghill Homes Project Manager, Taylor Bennett, Earns His Accredited Builder Designation

Categories: Team Members | Posted: November 29, 2017 | Comments Off on Evans Coghill Homes Project Manager, Taylor Bennett, Earns His Accredited Builder Designation

At Evans Coghill, we are continuously proud and inspired by the quality and expertise of our team members. But Project Manager Taylor Bennett has outdone himself, earning the hard to attain Accredited Builder Designation from the North Carolina Builder’s Institute. We’re extremely proud of his hard work and dedication, and want people to understand more about his endeavors and how they impact their new home search.

What does it mean to be an Accredited Builder?  What were the requirements to earn your Accredited Builder Designation (ABD)?

The purpose of the Accredited Builder Designation is to further the education of builders, but also to provide a more well-rounded builder experience. Earning the designation requires a certain amount of field experience, specifically 3 to 5 years in the building industry, actually building homes and being very hands on.  I also had to take 72 hours of classes through the North Carolina Builder’s Institute. My classes ranged from project management to business administration to customer service, with the intention of learning about all facets of building. It took about two years total for me to accomplish this part of the process.

Many people start this process but do not finish. Tell us what the process was like for you and why you continued through to the end?

My motivation was the attainment of it. I don’t like starting something and not completing it. My current interest is in high performance homes. I was taking courses for that, so it made sense to work on other facets of the building industry, too. The best way I could see to do that was to start and complete the ABD.

Does this designation differentiate you and/or Evans Coghill Homes from your competitors?

I don’t know a lot of people in the industry who have this designation. It’s a huge time commitment, so very few people wind up finishing it. As for how it affects Evans Coghill… homeowners expect a high quality home, but they don’t check to see who is building it. The ABD is a big differentiator. We can claim to be a better builder and back it up.

How will Evans Coghill homeowners benefit from the ABD?

In the long run, we can give them a higher quality product, and a more efficient building process. Faster close times, fewer delays or slow downs. The ABD allows me to foresee industry changes, and plan accordingly. Homes are increasingly complex structures, especially the HVAC systems and home automation features. I now have the ability to teach homeowners about their homes, so they are more educated and able to interact with it comfortably.

What does earning the ABD mean to you?

It was a long process but worth it. The ABD really benefits everyone – me, Evans Coghill Homes, our homeowners. My grandfather was a lawyer, and he instilled the importance of education in us. I thought about him when I was working for this designation. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, they all have to take continuing education to keep their licensing/certifications. Builders don’t. I put a lot of stock in education. Having this designation – or any designation recognized by the HBA or NCHBA – is not just letters behind a name. It means that we know that our industry is ever changing, and that we have a responsibility to keep current. At Evans Coghill, we take pride in what we do and want to be better at it always. In the end, it comes back to what’s best for the homeowner.
