Front Porches Are Better Than Patios

Almost every home in Baxter Village has a usable front porch. This is part of what makes Baxter Village a neighborhood and not just a subdivision.  In order to understand why, we need to understand what porches do.

Years ago, front porches were an extension of one’s home. They were a space for relaxing, entertaining or just greeting neighbors. Somewhere along the way, the front porch was abandoned in favor of a patio in the back yard. Although, enjoyable the patio could not replace a front porch.

A front porch is the link between your home and the public space on the street. It is the bridge between the private space and the sidewalk. It is the area that you can comfortably invite a neigbhor with little pretense. It is a place where you can advertise you are home and available for being part of the neighborhood.  Many engaging yet impromtu conversations have been hosted on a front porch on a warm summer evening.

Unfortunately, a patio in the backyard cannot be the link to street.  Likewise, a home without a front porch lacks the invitation for friendship that a front porch offers.  Evans Coghill is proud to be part of reviving the tradition of building homes with front porches.

Front porches help make Baxter Village a great neighborhood. Want to see it for yourself? Come on over warm evening and see if you don’t meet new friends on their porches.
